Ranking Every Park in Portland, OR: Burlingame Park

I'm visiting, rating, and ranking as many of Portland's 279 parks as I can. Check out the introduction and rubric. You can also check out the map and rankings here.

Date Visited: 4/5/2022

Visitors: Alex, Kita, Nana

Distance Walked: 1.51 miles

Not all of the parks we visit will be of note. Burlingame Park is an unremarkable neighborhood park in SW Portland, and that’s not a dig on it all. In the South Burlingame neighborhood, this park serves its purpose well.

Dog Friendliness: 2.5

A partially paved and a partially-graveled path make a loop around this small neighborhood park. There is a large field, and though it isn’t intended for off-leash pups explicitly, it is a nice place for a trained dog to have a great time. On a crisp Monday morning, around 8 AM, there was at least one dog off-leash in the park. No poop stations to speak of though.

Kid Friendliness: 4

There is not one, but two playgrounds are at Burlingame Park. The playgrounds are big though, and it might make it tough for kids younger than 3 or 4 years old to play on their own. The slides are very tall, and some of the equipment is clearly made for longer limbs.

There’s a usable baseball field, but the same could not be said for the tennis court. A large tree had collapsed into the chain-linked fence, which obstructed much of the court. According to a local, this happened between the night before and the morning of our visit. What wonderful timing we had.

Oh, and don’t expect a family restroom of any kind.

Walkability: 2.5

The walk is short, but the loop is fine. In our mile and a half, we looped around more times than I was interested in counting. This is an intersection for one of the SWTrails though, which connects it to some of the urban hiking in the area.

Scenery: 3

It is a fine park, overall. The neighborhood is quiet, and the homes are cute. The lawns of the park are well-manicured, and there is a barrier of trees between the park and the freeway. There is though, the noise from Interstate 5, which is visible in the gaps of the trees. Again, this is a fine neighborhood park, and it isn’t designed to be a tourist attraction.

Facilities: 2.5

No bathrooms here, but this does have a lot of the other essentials of a neighborhood park. Plenty of street parking, the playgrounds and fields, trash cans, and picnic benches can be enjoyed.

Overall Score: 14.5

Ranking as of posting: 3 (of 4)

What Portland Park should we visit next?
